Luke 20:27-33

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.”

I read this passage with both horror and confusion. It is true that the Sadducees are only engaged in a theoretical discussion and not talking about a person who has experienced such terrible grief and experiences, but it is chilling to me that such a "thought experiment" was considered a reasonable form of argument to have in the first place! The Sadducees were rivals of the Pharisees and are testing Jesus to see if he leans more to their way of thinking around the idea of resurrection. Its a fine point of theology they are highlighting. They are forgetting about the people that such discussions affect. Jesus both answers their question and shows his support of the idea of the resurrection, like the Pharisees. But then he presses them to consider how God is dealing with the living. It's not theory any more. It's personal!

Thanksgiving Service

On Sunday 17th November we will be sharing together in a Thanks Giving service. Many of us can remember Harvest Thanksgiving festivals in the past with wheat sheaves and piles of produce brought to the front of the church. Even in the city!

They were great celebrations of the abundance of God’s provision. This year we will revisit Thanks Giving but we are not asking you to bring food and produce. Instead we are asking members to bring gifts of money that will be used to secure ongoing ministry within the life of our church. You will each receive an envelope in which you provide either a cash or cheque gift, or include a slip indicating that you have made a direct deposit into our bank account. We have also established an online service where you can make contributions through your credit card. Details for these will be provided on the envelope.

We have invited Wendy Perkins, who has been our presbytery support person, and who is known to many in the congregation, to preach and encourage us to think about gratitude and giving with God’s abundance.

Please consider how you can support your church with a special gift on this Sunday.

Hungry No More - November 17th

Please see Bevan or Sandy Pugsley if you can help on the night or help with preparation or make a donation.

Church Council Members

Elections for Church Council will be held on Sunday 24 November. We have 3 positions available, if you believe that you can contribute to the administration of our congregation then you are invited to speak to either Peter or Geoff. The 3 year term for Michelle Bull and Jodi Lisk come to an end, Michelle has nominated for re-election.

Free new Children's Christmas book available

This November the celebrated author of the EJ12 Girl Hero and EJ Spy School series as well as Fairy Tales for Feisty Girls and Bold Tales for Brave-Hearted Boys, is releasing a new Christmas title, The Who, What, Why, How of Christmas. Working in partnership with Bible Society Australia, Susannah McFarlane asks some key questions about the Christmas story and explores Jesus’ birth through the eyes of four fictional characters.
McFarlane says, “Having only become a Christian three and a half years ago, I am realising that in our post-Christian society, children of Gen X and Gen Y families may never have heard or asked why there was such excitement about the birth of Jesus."
Bible Society Australia is offering The Who, What, Why, How of Christmas FREE to individuals and churches who register online. The church offer went live on 1 October and the individual offer began on 1 November.
