Luke 15:20 (GNTD)

Father of the Prodigal Son/The Love of the Father

“‘He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. “Father,” the son said, “I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.” But the father called to his servants. “Hurry!” he said. “Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.”’ And so the feasting began.”

Father’s Gift
To you, O son of mine, I cannot give
A vast estate of wide and fertile lands;
But I can keep for you, the whilst I live,
Unstained hands.
I have no blazoned scutcheon that insures
Your path to eminence and worldly fame;
But longer than empty heraldry endures
A blameless name.
I have no treasure chest of gold refined,
No hoarded wealth of clinking, glittering pelf;
I give to you my hand, and heart, and mind—
All of myself.
I can exert no mighty influence
To make a place for you in men's affairs;
But lift to God in secret audience
Unceasing prayers.
I cannot, though I would, be always near
To guard your steps with the parental rod;
I trust your soul to Him who holds you dear,
Your father's God.

By Merrill C. Tenney
Tenney (1904-1985) was a professor of the New Testament and dean of the graduate school at Wheaton College. This poem, penned for his two sons, expresses the heart’s desire of a Christian father to pass on a lasting spiritual heritage.

I think you would all agree that it has been wonderful to see some young people in our worship over the past month as we welcome the Miller family to Balhannah. As a congregation we need to ensure that we are catering for the needs of young families if we are to retain and indeed attract more families into the life of our church. Our thanks go to Sue Smith for being proactive in this area who has been taking the children out for their own special time during the sermon over the past couple of weeks. However Sue is unable to do this every week whilst being on the worship lead and preaching rosters and would like some assistance. If you have a gift with children and a passion for seeing young people again at BUC then Sue would love to hear from you to discuss how we can continue nurturing and caring for these little souls.
But Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children. "Matthew 19:14 (NLT)
