16th December 2018

Luke 3: 9-11

Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”

Advent, as a time of preparation, is not just a time of quiet reflection. It is a call to action. John, the baptiser, in this selection from Luke's gospel, is being very direct. God is bringing about change and is calling us to account. Get on God's good side and share what you have with the poor. Wealth and prosperity are great things. Hanging on to wealth and prosperity for your self is not so great. Wealth increases when it is shared and diminishes when it is protected.

John's call for reform and repentance was signified through washing with water. He pointed to one who would come that would wash in Spirit and fire. Come, Lord Jesus, Come.

Advent Studies

The last Advent session for 2018 will be held at the Woodside Uniting Church on Wednesday the 19th of December, commencing at 7.30pm. During the last 90 minute session we will share together in a brief closing worship and Eucharist. This allows us to build on the work done during our Lenten studies earlier this year and help us develop further shared activities next year. The session will end with refreshments.

Christmas Bowl Appeal

Christmas Bowl envelopes are available at the door. The theme for our giving this year is "Love your neighbour as yourself." (Mark 12:31)

Christian Care and Share

Christian Care and Share no longer pack Christmas Hampers so Christmas food is not needed. Instead they are asking for ,non-perishable food donations for their re-opening in January 2019 when there is a higher demand.

Food donations can be made up until Thursday 20th December when the centre will close for this year.

Mwandi Orphans & Vulnerable Children's Project

Sandy Pugsley has volunteered to resume the position of Administrator for the Education Sponsorship Program and the 2019 year has begun. On the table in the foyer there are some shopping/gift bags that have been sewn by the Vocational class at Mwandi village. They are $10 each. You could use them as Christmas Gift Bags. The Project would appreciate your support.
Please consider giving a "gift of Education" this year. On behalf of your family members or friends, sponsor an orphan or vulnerable child in the Mwandi Community to enable them to attend school.
