11th November 2018

Mark 12:38-40

As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Beware indeed. Hypocrisy is a serious accusation. For Jesus' society and for ours. Hypocrisy is the sign of corruption. It's more than just grandstanding or showing off.

Jesus is pointing out the corruption at the heart of his society and that those who have the responsibility of caring for the most vulnerable are in fact exploiting them and profiting off of their misery.

One way to measure the health of a society is to watch closely how it cares for its most vulnerable members. How well do we do this?

Advent Studies

In co-operation with the UCA ministers at Woodside, Nairne and Lobethal and the Anglican priest from Woodside and Balhannah we have decided to offer a short series of studies during Advent 2018. They will be held at the Woodside Uniting Church on Wednesday the 5th, 12th and 19th of December, commencing at 7.30pm. We will be exploring the theme of “God revealed in Creation” and examining how God is to be discovered in our interactions with creation leading towards God’s revelation in the birth of Jesus. Each session will take about 90 minutes and will end with refreshments. During the last session we will share together in a brief closing worship and Eucharist. This allows us to build on the work done during our Lenten studies earlier this year and help us develop further shared activities next year.

Woodside Christmas Pageant

Woodside Uniting Church has a float in the Christmas Pageant each year and is wondering if anyone from Balhannah would be interested in helping out. From 5.30pm-7.30pm on the 20th of December. You will bring a red, yellow or white T shirt and walk with the float to hand out pamphlets. Any takers? Contact Geoff if interested.

General Meeting of the Congregation

A General Meeting of the congregation will be held on Sunday, December 2 following the morning service. Please note the date change. Several members of Church Council are near the end of their term so elections need to be held. We will be calling for nominations from November 11 and closing date will be Friday, November 30. Further, nominations are called for our Synod/Presbytery representative who must be voted in by the membership. Please prayerfully consider who you might nominate ahead of nomination forms being available on November 11.

Lothethal Nativity Play

If you want to join in the fun and singing for the Lobethal Nativity Play this year please contact Di Pearson. We will be making our contribution on Tuesday December 11th.
