Luke 19:1-6

He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”

It is easy to criticise the rich. I do it often. And as much as I realise it's both jealousy and indignation on my part it is a hard habit to shake, especially if I think that their wealth has been gathered through suspect means. This story shows that there is nothing new about this attitude. What IS new is the way in which Jesus embraces and accepts Zacchaeus and shares hospitality with him. Jesus is shown to gladly associate with anyone who shows interest and readiness. Jesus is the ultimate "boundary crosser" in order to both seek out and save the lost.

Thanks Giving Service - November 17th 2019

On Sunday 17th November we will be sharing together in a Thanks Giving service. Many of us can remember Harvest Thanksgiving festivals in the past with wheat sheaves and piles of produce brought to the front of the church. Even in the city!

They were great celebrations of the abundance of God’s provision. This year we will revisit Thanks Giving but we are not asking you to bring food and produce. Instead we are asking members to bring gifts of money that will be used to secure ongoing ministry within the life of our church. You will each receive an envelope in which you provide either a cash or cheque gift, or include a slip indicating that you have made a direct deposit into our bank account. We have also established an online service where you can make contributions through your credit card. Details for these will be provided on the envelope.

We have invited Wendy Perkins, who has been our presbytery support person, and who is known to many in the congregation, to preach and encourage us to think about gratitude and giving with God’s abundance. Please consider how you can support your church with a special gift on this Sunday.
