Commissioning of Matt Curnow as
Disaster Recovery Pastor

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
Thank you for your positive response to the news of the appointment of Rev Matt Curnow as a short term 0.5FTE Disaster Recovery Pastor to support the UCA churches and communities in the Adelaide Hills. Matt has already begun in this role and is making contact with congregations and individuals, offering pastoral support and a listening ear wherever it is needed. In particular he will be encouraging congregations to consider how they support their communities during the recovery process. It would be great to see this happening in a combined way, even between denominations, in order to send a message of unity and strength to the community. Rev Geoff Hurst, who is Chair of the Onkaparinga Valley Ministers Association, will be attending Local Recovery Committee meetings with me for the time being and will be an important two-way channel for information between the Committee and local churches.

We are planning to hold a commissioning service for Matt Curnow on Sunday week 12 January commencing at 1.30pm at Balhannah Uniting Church. It would be great if all the UC congregations in the Hills could be represented at this short service, where the Moderator will commission Matt. Could you please advise your congregation of this opportunity at your worship service this weekend if at all possible.

Instead of the usual shared afternoon tea after the service, we are strongly encouraging folks to go across the road to the Olive Branch Café to purchase their own refreshments and enjoy some time together. We felt that it’s important at this time to provide practical support to our community and businesses, especially as the manager of that Café lost her own home at Lobethal in the fire.

Matt’s contact details are as follows:

Mobile: 0408 984 130
We look forward to seeing you at Balhannah next Sunday afternoon, and to seeing how God will use Matt’s ministry to demonstrate His compassion and grace to people affected by the tragic Adelaide Hills fires. Blessings.

From our Moderator

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ
Catastrophic fire conditions continue to impact many areas of Australia with at least five states and many communities affected.
I am writing to ask the whole Uniting Church in South Australia to join many others across the country in earnestly praying for the fire situation affecting so many individuals and whole communities who feel helpless in their desperate circumstances.
Please join me in praying for protection for the firefighters, wisdom for those making decisions and comfort for those suffering losses. Pray that the fires turn back on themselves - a change in wind direction different and unique for each fire front. We also pray that, after the fires burn themselves out, a gentle rain will extinguish the burning trunks and roots.
Along with your prayers, I encourage you to continue to support those providing care to people affected by the fires in practical ways, by donating to the UCSA Relief Fund [] and other appeals in the affected areas.
Your prayers and messages of encouragement are important and appreciated.
Bronte Wilson
