Ephesians 1:11-14

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

The idea of inheritance is interesting. Building wealth from generation to generation. That day dream of the long lost relative who, upon their death, grants us access to treasure and title, is right up there with winning the lottery. If you had such a boon how would you show it? Property? Vehicles? Holidays? Parties? Yes please! If you have it then show it!

Paul’s audience, who were mostly poor and common, when being poor and common meant something, would never expect to receive a gift of wealth from any one. In these word’s Paul ties us into Christ’s life, death and resurrection claiming us to be God’s own people, Christ’s family who have inherited his wealth and riches. If we have such a boon then how to show it? The work, gift and gifts of the Holy Spirit in acts of mercy, love and kindness are the signs that we are rich in God.
