Luke 10:8-12
Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’
Regardless of the welcome received the response is the same… “The kingdom of God has come near to you.”
Jesus has sent 70 of his followers out. No gimmicks, resources or demands. Not even the expectation of success. Just actions and words that demonstrate that the kingdom of God is near. Jesus’s intent is for “the seventy” to act as harvesters. The kingdom of God has proceeded them. They don’t need to create it or otherwise bring it into being. Their task is to point it out and call for response. Some would welcome this. Some would not. The work of the seventy was to announce that the kingdom of God is at hand. That work continues with us.
