The unravelling of White Ribbon Australia
At the beginning of October, White Ribbon Australia closed its doors after the company announced it was in liquidation. The White Ribbon movement – largest of its kind in the world – aims to engage men and boys in working to end male violence against women and girls. Uniting Communities’ Rev Peter McDonald, a long-time White Ribbon Ambassador, shares his thoughts on the organisation and its demise. Synod AGM 13 – 16 November 2019
Only two weeks to go!
The final mailing with reports, draft program and proposals will be sent out today so that members can prepare and pray for the matters which will come before our meeting.
If you have a question about any of the reports – either those which will be part of report electives or those to be presented to the plenary sessions – please contact the report author before the meeting. This will allow them to do whatever research or thinking may be needed to enable them to respond helpfully.
Please prayerfully consider nominating either yourself or someone you know for the vacancies on our boards and committees.

Praying with the Moderator…
… for the Annual Meeting of the Synod of South Australia
Synod is a fortnight away! Please join me in praying for the meeting of our Synod.
This week we pray for the restructuring of our Synod into multiple Presbyteries.
We give thanks for the Generate Presbytery and pray for their Standing Committee and leaders Rev Dr Graham Humphris, Rev Steph Tai and Rev David Hoffman, and for the formation of a Pastoral Relations team. We also give thanks for the Transitional Presbytery and the leadership offered by Mr Malcolm Wilson, Ms Susan Burt and Mr Barry Atwell during this season.
Additionally, we give thanks for the wide consultation led by the General Secretary across the Synod, which has informed the proposals for the new presbyteries coming to the Synod meeting. Pray for the working groups which will discuss the Presbytery proposals: that they will be united in their love and concern for all the congregations and their needs across the Synod. Read paragraphs 15, 16 and 17 of the Basis of Union as a reminder of how the structures of our Church were first given and pray into the given vision for the Uniting Church.
Gracious and Loving God, let the wind of the Holy Spirit blow across the Synod members who gather to discern the Presbyteries for the South Australian Synod and reveal the most helpful structures for the life and mission of the Uniting Church in South Australia. Bless every congregation and its life and witness with the reassurance of your presence with them in times of change. May faith, hope and love abound. Amen

Happy birthday, Yilki Jefferis Memorial, St Andrew’s Strathalbyn & Dowlingville!
Two of our congregations celebrate big birthdays this upcoming weekend, and there’s another to look forward to next weekend.
This weekend congratulations are in order for Yilki Jefferis Memorial Uniting Church [https://sa.uca.org.au/events/details/1911-yilki-jefferis-memorial-uniting-church] in Encounter Bay which celebrates a full century, and for St Andrew’s Strathalbyn Uniting Church [https://sa.uca.org.au/events/details/1911-175th-celebrations-at-st-andrews-strathalbyn]which celebrates 175 years.
As expected, both congregations will be throwing open the doors and hospitality mats so that everyone can enjoy some birthday cake, entertainment, worship and, of course, nostalgia.

Standing with Farmers
Uniting Church President Dr Deidre Palmer has joined Frontier Services staff on a visit to drought-stricken areas of outback New South Wales.
Deidre and Frontier Services National Director Jannine Jackson made a pastoral call to three farms around Tottenham and Nyngan with Bush Chaplain Rev Phill Matthews, who is caring for farm families facing the worst drought conditions on record.
Some properties in the area haven’t seen rain for the past six years, and the impacts of the drought are immediately apparent.
