Praying with the Moderator…
… for the Annual Meeting of the Synod of South Australia
The Synod meeting is just over a week away! Please join me in praying for the Synod meeting.
This week we pray for the worship team and others who will serve the Synod and its meeting. The Manual for Meetings suggests if 20% of all meeting time is devoted to worship and community building, time is saved in overall decision making because of the trusting relationships formed. (Manual for Meetings 1.4).
Lift up the worship team before God and pray for the worship and community times to bring joy and the blessing of unity to those gathered. Pray for the Uniting Tech team who faithfully volunteer to serve our Synod meetings each year and pray for the Synod staff who will be present to serve the meeting through minute taking, projection and office support.
Pray also for the members of Adelaide West Uniting Church who will host the meeting and assist with car parking, catering and cleaning services. And for Uniting College who will help to host various groups and events throughout the meeting.
Jesus, you came not to be served but to serve. We offer to you your servants for the Synod meeting – the worship teams, the technology team, Synod staff, the members of Adelaide West Uniting Church and the Uniting College of Leadership and Theology who will support the work of the Synod members through their gifts and spaces. Bless this meeting with a sense of being a whole community together, seeking to share your love and your way and appreciating the gifts each person and organisation brings to the whole. Amen

Free new Children’s Christmas book available
This November the celebrated author of the EJ12 Girl Hero and EJ Spy School series as well as Fairy Tales for Feisty Girls and Bold Tales for Brave-Hearted Boys, is releasing a new Christmas title, The Who, What, Why, How of Christmas. Working in partnership with Bible Society Australia, Susannah McFarlane asks some key questions about the Christmas story and explores Jesus’ birth through the eyes of four fictional characters.
McFarlane says, “Having only become a Christian three and a half years ago, I am realising that in our post-Christian society, children of Gen X and Gen Y families may never have heard or asked why there was such excitement about the birth of Jesus.”
Bible Society Australia is offering The Who, What, Why, How of Christmas free to individuals and churches who register online. The church offer went live on 1 October and the individual offer began on 1 November.

Aged Care Royal Commission – We need comprehensive change
National Director of UnitingCare Australia Claerwen Little has joined calls for more affordable aged care that meets community expectations.
In an Interim Report handed down last week, the Aged Care Royal Commission said Australia’s aged care system failed to meet the needs of elderly people, often neglected them and was “unkind and uncaring”.
“Ageism sees older people as a burden on society. It fails to recognise the inherent value of each person irrespective of their age or how they contribute. Ageism is reflected in the current aged care system by the assumption that it is acceptable for older people to wait for needed care and support,” said Claerwen.
